Samaura Stone Joins the DC Action for Children Team!
Hi Everyone. I'm really excited to share that Samaura Stone has joined our team as Director, Youth Policy and Programs. In Samaura's role, she will establish a team of policy experts and youth organizers and lead a city-wide coalition seeking to empower young people to advocate for systemic changes that will remove barriers and position them for success.
Samaura brings more than a decade of passion and experience in the non-profit and government sectors, with a keen focus on elevating youth voice, improving equity, and aligning policy with practice.
Prior to joining our team, she was a Senior Director at the American Youth Policy Forum (AYPF). She led AYPF’s work focused on informing policymakers on ways to increase education and workforce outcomes for youth experiencing homelessness, involved in the juvenile justice system, and transitioning out of foster care. She also managed their Out-of-School Time, College and Career Readiness, and High School Success portfolio. Samaura was also a Policy Analyst at the Aspen Institute where she worked with states on implementing a coordinated, systems-level approach to increase economic security for youth and families. She has also worked on a range of education and youth policy issues for two U.S. Senators and with Portland Public Schools.
Originally from Oregon, she received her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree with a concentration in Organizational Leadership and Management from Portland State University. As a former direct-practice social worker, Samaura has advocated for various populations; including formerly incarcerated women and individuals impacted by mental health and substance abuse disorders. In 2017, Samaura was appointed to the Montgomery County Board of Social Services. In this role, she is responsible for advising the County Executive, Council, State Department of Human Services and Governor’s office on issues and policies pertaining to children, adults and families. She is a long-time Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children in foster care and a former America’s Leaders of Change, National Urban Fellow.
During her free time, Samaura likes to travel, dive into fiction books, enjoy the outdoors, and work on perfecting vegan recipes.
In true DC Action tradition, here's a bit more about Samaura...
What's your favorite DC spot?
I love being outdoors, so it would have to be Rock Creek Park. For socializing, it’s H street. So many amazing vegan restaurants there.
What's your favorite genre of music to work to?
Either gospel or hip hop. (lol, quite a difference)
As a child, what did you say you were going to be when you grew up?
I wanted to do something in fashion, probably a wardrobe stylist... but I was afraid to move to NY or LA.
What's your favorite app
Here's the clincher...food cuisine you just can't do without
Definitely Thai Food.
Please help me in giving Samaura a warm welcome!
