DC Action for Children Statement on the Selection of Sara Mead, OSSE Assistant Superintendent of Early Learning

We congratulate Superintendent Hanseul Kang on completing the search for OSSE’s next Assistant Superintendent of Early Learning. We are pleased to welcome Sara Mead to DC’s early learning policy community.  Ms. Mead brings extensive experience in education and early childhood policy and organizational leadership.

The District is a national leader in early childhood education. This has only been possible thanks to many years of collaboration and investment between the early care and education community and DC’s policymakers. We hope and expect that Ms. Mead and her team at the Division for Early Learning will continue to work with us with transparency, inclusivity, and a laser focus on equity as we endeavor to improve access and affordability for all young children in the District. Together as public-private partners, we will continue to build a high quality and equitable system that levels the playing field for Black and brown children, and will open up unlimited opportunity for all of DC’s children.

We extend our gratitude to Dr. Margareth Legaspi and Eva Laguerre who served as co-interim Assistant Superintendents of Early Learning and kept the work going smoothly during a rather challenging period while the search was conducted. We are excited to welcome Assistant Superintendent Mead in early August, and invite her into the community to sit with and spend time with children, their families and educators (from a safe distance!).
